Plant Care & Growing Tips

Caring for your Black Haw Viburnum live shrub is straightforward, ensuring a healthy and thriving plant that will grace your garden for years. These plants prefer a location with full sun to partial shade. Full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day) will generally result in the most abundant flowering and best fall color, while partial shade (4-6 hours of direct sun, especially afternoon shade in hot climates) is also well-tolerated. When it comes to watering, consistent moisture is key, particularly during the establishment phase. Water deeply once or twice a week, or more frequently during hot, dry periods, ensuring the soil remains evenly moist but not waterlogged. Once established, the Viburnum prunifolium plant exhibits good drought tolerance.

The ideal soil for a hardy landscape shrub like the Black Haw Viburnum is well-draining, fertile loam, but it adapts well to a wide range of soil types, including clay and sandy soils, as long as drainage is adequate. Amend heavy clay soils with organic matter to improve drainage and aeration. For fertilization, a balanced slow-release granular fertilizer applied in early spring before new growth emerges is usually sufficient. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can promote leafy growth at the expense of flowers. This viburnum is hardy in USDA zones 3-9, tolerating a broad spectrum of temperatures. Pruning is best done after flowering to shape the plant, remove dead or damaged branches, or control its size. Common problems are few, but watch for aphids or spider mites, which can typically be managed with insecticidal soap.
