Plant Care & Growing Tips

Caring for your callisia fragrans live plant is straightforward, making it an ideal choice for both beginners and seasoned plant enthusiasts. Understanding its basic needs will ensure vigorous growth and a healthy, lush appearance. This plant thrives with consistent care but is also forgiving of minor oversights, making the callisia plant care routine quite manageable.

For sunlight, the basket chain plant prefers bright, indirect light. Direct, harsh sunlight can scorch its leaves, especially during the hottest parts of the day. If growing indoors, an east or north-facing window is ideal. If you’re placing it near a south or west-facing window, ensure it’s set back a bit or filtered by a sheer curtain. Outdoors, choose a spot with dappled shade or morning sun and afternoon shade. When it comes to watering, keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so good drainage is crucial. Reduce watering slightly during the cooler, dormant months. The wandering jew houseplant appreciates humidity, so misting occasionally or placing it near a humidifier can be beneficial, especially in dry indoor environments.

The ideal soil for your callisia fragrans live plant is a well-draining potting mix. A standard houseplant mix amended with perlite or sand for extra drainage works perfectly. Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent water from accumulating at the bottom. This plant prefers average room temperatures, generally between 60-75°F (15-24°C). It is sensitive to frost, so if growing outdoors, it should be brought inside when temperatures drop below 50°F (10°C). It is generally suitable for USDA zones 9-11 outdoors. Fertilize every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce or stop fertilization during fall and winter. Common problems include yellowing leaves from overwatering or brown, crispy leaves from too much direct sun or underwatering. Keep an eye out for common houseplant pests like spider mites or aphids, though Callisia fragrans is relatively pest-resistant.
